“Work-from-home days are really starting to level off,” said Matthew Confer, vice president of strategy for Abilitie, during his FASTtalk at the 2023 Chief Learning Officer Symposium in San Diego. “At the onset of 2020, the numbers got as high as 60 percent of all days worked in America were worked from home. Recently, the number has settled in at around 35 percent and stabilized.”
Confer cited Zoom as an example of one company that made the decision to bring people back to the office in 2023. “The irony of this decision was not lost on the media,” he said. “And it is somewhat emblematic of the larger trend in the world of work.”
Confer’s FASTtalk, “Work Trends: New Workplaces and New Workflows,” was the first of two FASTtalks held during this CLO Power Hour session on the afternoon of October 16. The presentation focused on two key topics: trends around where we work, and trends around how we work.
“It might surprise you to find out that relatively few workers work from home full time,” Confer said. “Only about 12 percent of the workforce, according to the National Bureau of Economic [Research], works from home full time.
“It might not surprise you,” he continued, “to find out that there are definitely some trends in that from an industry perspective.”
