Liz Loutfi: I think something that L&D has known for a very long time, obviously, but maybe started becoming more mainstream, common knowledge during the pandemic was just how much impact L&D, and learning leaders themselves, too, just have on company culture.
Marcus Wylie: I think there’s a link happening between, because you’re right, L&D’s always been there, right? And learning leaders have known this, so the supply has been there.
The sponsorship has maybe said, “Go and send my managers on some program over here to do something because we need to be seen to do something.” I’m not saying that’s how every organization did it, but in many places that happens. And then the employee would, in a disgruntled way, go, “Oh my God, oh my goodness, I’m being sent on this course. I don’t even know why.”
I think that little equation of those three parties has come more into alignment. That would be my observation. So although we’ve known about L&D, suddenly the more purposeful employee is wanting to be much and more intentional about their growth, and the employer who is funding it and thinking about the whole, how it all fits together, is thinking we need to make this valuable and relevant. And I think those things coming together means that the flow from L&D seems to be working.
